Apathetic: What does that mean for a generation of men and women who are tired of it all...Tired of arguing and "mud slinging," tired of man vs. Man and the battle over church and state. Is it then, easier to forget it all and form a new political group known as the "who cares" party? I submit an idea-maybe it will offend and maybe it will penetrate, but I hope that it makes us all think. The idea is simple and without endless proof or statistics or even research; but the idea seems to me, perfectly logical. Laziness. We have in our midst a group of young inactive socialites who couldn't care less about the happenings of this world. We depend on our parents to handle the sticky things. We hope for the best during voting season, as we drink our frappucinos and escape into our ipods until the ballots are closed (if we even know that it is election day). We have no ability to discuss current events, nor do we care to engage in political thinking. Do we not realize that the day is coming when we will be without the minds outside of ourselves? What then? Will we continue to live our lackadaisical lives and allow time to pilfer away our chance to divide right from wrong? Or do we even know right from wrong? I understand, it's all relative. That's what we like to say. It's easy. Relative: a word that rolls off the tongue, much like our favorite word, "whatever." We are the whatever generation. It would not be lady like to speak my thoughts at this moment, but I will say this: By letting loose and leaving everything to divine will, we are throwing away our hopes and dreams. Do you wish to remain free? Do you enjoy your rights? Do you want to give your kids a life as good as (or better than) what you have been given? If so, you must start to care. At the time of our creation, we were given minds, wills, determination, and the ability to act. We were made to experience life to its fullest; But in order to partake in an enjoyable life, we have to protect ourselves from those who wish to strip us of our pleasures. I remind myself to listen, observe, heed knowledge, and speak. If you consider yourself an apathetic relativist, care about yourself enough to think about what you are saying. Make known what it is you believe. Arguing for the sake of good is not forsaking peace. It is fighting for peace.
I used to think that by staying abreast of import issues, I would be expected to live the rest of my life on a platform, arguing before a plethora of media personalities. I have come to see that my thinking was misconstrued. In actuality, I am depriving myself of an education. What you have just read has stemmed from a personal frustration...Not being able to engage in intelligent conversation. Yes, I can tell you who looked the best on the red carpet. I can argue up and down that Auburn football is in desperate need of some competition in order to propel an exciting season. And I can write endless thoughts from within my own imagination. What will these things do for me come next year when I am faced every day with men and women who are more knowledgeable than I? Without them I will be a boring hum drum of intellectual words, but if I can discuss all of the above, I will find myself blanketed with the favor of many peoples. When they see that we care, they will walk a thousand miles to see that we find our way.
