We had class all day Monday, but it was OK, because our day ended with a wine tasting in the home of Marco and Mary Lou. In addition to the tasting, Mary Lou cooked us a delicious dinner. We had terimisu for desert. I thought I had died and gone to Heaven...again.
This morning we had the field trip of my dreams. We visited Cinecitta, a very famous and prominent Italian Production Company/Studio. Oh my gosh. The place was enormous! It was slightly difficult to understand everything because the tour was given in Italian. We had "here and there translations," but for the most part I was able to follow what was going on.
Hundreds of films and tv series have been produced here and we were able to see many of the props that have been left on site. Unlike many production companies today, the majority of their work is still done by hand. The craftsmenship was unbelievable. According to our guide, it took two weeks to simulate Assisi in 1200, and may be seen in the film, "San Francesco." American producers have made countless trips to Italy to film their projects, which was exciting for me.
Four of the most recent films filmed there were The Exorcist (1&2), Gangs of New York, and The Passion of Christ. WOW! Can you imagine? I saw, with my own two eyes, the studios and sets for both movies. The garden of gethsemene (sp?) scene in The Passion... was done completely inside a huge studio (theater/room) measuring 80x40 meters in length and width respectively. All lighting was simulated to create the correct effects for specific times of day/night. I found it all fascinating, and now, I sort of want to go into production/set design. Oh no...I can't change my major again. (no, no, no)
The picture below is of the street created for Gangs of New York, representing the city in the 20's. Amazing craftsmenship. Gosh, there is so much more to tell, but I do not have the time to type it all right now.
Tomorrow at 5:30 am, we leave for a three day field trip to Florence, Sienna, and Tuscany. We will remain in Tuscany (on our own) through Sunday. I can't wait! I have pictured myself in Tuscany for who knows how long. My goal is to ride a horse through a vinyard at sunset, but I'm not sure where I'm going to get the horse.
Recreation of New York, 1920
Recreation of Assisi, 1200 (it's crooked, b/c I had to be sneaky...)
